October 6th - Junior chess comes to Skelmersdale

The Lancashire Chess Association brought one of their seasonal Junior Tournaments to the Birch Green Community Centre at the request of Skelmersdale Chess Club. These events bring together some of the best young players from the county.

The event was well organised and proved a great success, especially for nine year old, Stephen Chung who has started attending Skelmersdale chess club. Stephen managed seven straight wins from seven games, not bad for his first tournament!

Skelmersdale Chess Club are hopeful that similar events run by the LCA will again take place in the town and that more local juniors will take the opportunity to compete. Photos

Summer Handicap Tournament

Starting 4th July and ending 12th September.

The total time for each game is 60 minutes. The handicap is as follows: -

Players with 10 or less grading points between them play 30 minutes each * - 11 to 20 grading points differential - 35 minutes plays 25 minutes
- 21 to 30 grading points differential - 40 minutes plays 20 minutes
- 31 to 50 grading points differential - 45 minutes plays 15 minutes
- Over 50 grading points differential - 50 minutes plays 10 minutes
Ungraded players will be estimated by tournament secretary - Ian Turner

Players play a maximum of two games against each other (White and Black) and can join the tournament at any time.

To encourage attendance the most points wins the tournament rather than the best percentage. 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw. Only the first 20 games played will count to a players score.

* If mutually agreed a longer playing time can be played by players with ten or less grading points between them.

AGM 2007, 16 May 2007

No major changes. The 2 Johns swap roles with John Parrot becoming chairman and John Reid secretary. Ian Turner will be the new 1st team captain. John Parrot stepped down as 3rd team captain.

Skelmersdale to remain in the NMS rather than join the ECF Merseyside scheme because it was considered important to support the NMS junior activities.

No change to membership fees. Club finances remain in good shape. Membership remains steady. A new format club competition will be started during the summer.

Tony Crawford

It is sad to report the passing of Tony Crawford. Tony was a keen player, a regular player for our teams and a founding member of the Club. Tony always fought hard and played a good solid game, but also was a lovely guy and will be missed by all at the club.
